Free Cataract Operation Eye Camp
On 28 November 2024, the Bihar Eye Bank Trust, which operates the Jharkhand Eye Bank Hospital and Research Centre in Ranchi, organized a free cataract operation eye camp at the Dak Bungalow in Tamar. This initiative was made possible with the support of Dr. Sushant Sinha, a former resident of Bundu now residing in the United States, who played a crucial role in coordinating the camp’s arrangements and securing the necessary permissions.

The eye camp was held in memory of several esteemed individuals, including Late Swarna Lata Sinha of Bundu (mother of Dr. Sushant Sinha), Late Gopinath Sinha (former member of the Executive Committee of Bihar Eye Bank Trust and Dr. Sushant Sinha’s brother), as well as Late Nanda Dulal Sinha and Late Prabha Tankha, two other close relatives. Dr. Sushant Sinha has been a key patron in the development of the Jharkhand Eye Bank Hospital and Research Centre, significantly contributing to its growth over the years.

While the rice harvesting season limited the number of patients who could attend, 35 individuals were still examined. Some cataract patients were found to have high blood sugar levels, preventing them from undergoing immediate surgery. The selected patients were referred to the Jharkhand Eye Bank Hospital and Research Centre in Ranchi, where three patients successfully underwent cataract surgery on 29 November 2024. These patients were later examined and discharged after a follow-up on the next day.

In keeping with the camp’s commitment to providing comprehensive care, all patients and their attendants were offered free food, lodging, cataract surgery, medicines, and post-operative dark glasses. Follow-up visits will be scheduled one week and one month post-surgery to ensure optimal recovery.
Dr. Vinita Sinha, from the Jharkhand Eye Bank Hospital and Research Centre, along with her team, Kumari Punam Minj, Sri Mukesh Kumar Singh, and Ms. Anu Verma examined the patients. Local community members, including Sri Kamlesh Yadav (known as Ravi), assisted with registration, while Sri Gourishankar Sinha, Advocate, and others attended to the camp. Dr. P. Sinha, the Secretary of the Bihar Eye Bank Trust, was also present during the event.

Jharkhand Eye Bank Hospital and Research Centre is run by Bihar Eye Bank Trust, a registered charitable trust (No. 17174 of 1974 under the Indian Trust Act), founded by Late N. Bakshi I.C.S. The Trust is headed by H.E. the Governor of Jharkhand and includes other state dignitaries.
The Bihar Eye Bank Trust is a permanent member of Eye Bank Association of India and is registered under the District Blindness Control Society, Ranchi.
The Hospital is housed in a three-storied building standing on 0.7 acres of land in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. It is easily reached road, rail and air.
